Rubber Neti, also known as Sutra Neti, is a traditional yogic practice used to cleanse the nasal passages and improve respiratory health. Unlike Jal Neti, which uses water, Sutra Neti involves inserting a soft rubber catheter or a cotton thread (sutra) through the nostrils to clear nasal blockages and stimulate nasal passage functions.
Benefits of Rubber (Sutra) Neti:
- Clears nasal congestion: Helps remove mucus and debris from the nasal passages.
- Improves breathing: Enhances airflow by clearing obstructions.
- Prevents sinus infections: Keeps the nasal cavity clean, reducing sinusitis risk.
- Enhances sensory perception: Improves olfactory senses and mental clarity.
- Stimulates nerves: Activates nerves connected to the eyes, ears, and brain.
- Reduces snoring: Helps open up the nasal passage for better airflow.
How to Perform Rubber (Sutra) Neti:
Materials Required:
- A soft rubber catheter (around 2–3 mm in diameter and 20–30 cm long) or a sterilized cotton thread dipped in beeswax for smoothness.
- Lukewarm salted water (for lubrication, if necessary).
Step-by-Step Process:
Prepare Yourself:
- Sit in a comfortable position with a relaxed posture.
- Keep your breathing steady and calm.
- Wash your hands and ensure hygiene before beginning.
Inserting the Rubber Catheter:
- Gently insert the soft rubber catheter into one nostril.
- Slowly and carefully push it backward until it reaches the throat.
- Once the tip is felt at the back of the throat, open your mouth and gently pull it out using two fingers.
- If you are unable to reach it easily, do not force it—practice with patience.
Gentle Massaging:
- Move the catheter gently back and forth to cleanse the nasal passages.
- This helps in dislodging accumulated mucus and debris.
Removing the Catheter:
- Once the nasal passage feels cleared, gently pull the catheter back through the nostril.
- Repeat the same process for the other nostril.
Cleaning and Relaxing:
- Wash the catheter thoroughly with warm water and disinfect it.
- After the practice, perform a few deep breaths or Bhramari Pranayama to relax the nasal passages.
Precautions to Take:
- Beginner's Guidance: Always learn Sutra Neti under the guidance of an experienced yoga teacher.
- Use the Right Size: Ensure the catheter is soft, flexible, and of the appropriate size to avoid injury.
- Do Not Force: If you experience excessive discomfort, stop and try again later.
- Nasal Dryness: If you feel dryness post-practice, apply a little ghee or coconut oil in the nostrils.
- Avoid if Sick: Do not perform if you have severe nasal infections, bleeding, or a deviated septum.
Best Time to Perform:
- Early morning on an empty stomach for best results.
- Can be done 2-3 times a week, but avoid overdoing it.
With regular practice, Rubber Neti can greatly improve nasal health, breathing efficiency, and overall respiratory wellness.
